New Beginnings

I love coffee; I mean I really love coffee. For me the day has not begun until I’ve had my morning cup of Joe. Now, because I take this love of mine seriously, I can’t just drink out of any mug in the morning – I need a mug that either reminds me of a special place, was given to me from someone special OR has something written on it that will motivate me for the day to come. One of my favorite coffee mugs sports this very famous quote from Henry David Thoreau “go confidently in the direction of your dreams, live the life that you have imagined”.

I’m the kind of person that likes motivational sayings and finds great value in reading them and reminding myself to try and enact or display the meaning behind them. On a day-to-day, this coffee mug reminds to make the most of my day, to do the things I want to do and to continue to strive to fulfill my dreams. What this mug never got me to thinking until until this week was to reflect back upon my life, I had always had a forward thought or vision not a retro one.

This past week, I have been packing like a mad person, my husband and I are moving from our condo into a house on the weekend. We moved into our area, our building 12 years ago as newly weds, we have in those 12 years purchased 2 units, undergone crazy renovations, travelled the world, and had our greatest dreams come true, we had our little Liana. I have thoroughly enjoyed living in our area for the most of my adult life, I have created such wonderful memories that I will forever cherish.

So where am I going with this? What is the connection between my move and my coffee mug? This morning as I drank my morning cup of coffee I looked down at my mug as I normally do, but this morning I started to think about the life I have lived so far, not think about the day that was ahead of me. Perhaps because of the move, I was feeling a bit more nostalgic and took some extra time this morning to reflect upon my life so far, in particular my past 12 years, which coincide with how long I’ve been in my current location. I have to admit, I may have shed a tear or two thinking about how blessed I have been and how grateful I am to have such amazing people in my life that have inspired and encouraged me to go after my dreams. I thought about the people that have passed in those years, how they influenced me and played a role in my life.

My purpose this week is to not get all sappy on all of you, but rather help remind you that it’s quite cathartic to sit down and reflect upon where you’ve come from, what you’ve accomplished, what you are grateful for. This week as I embark on a new chapter in my life I will continue to enjoy my reflections of the past as I await the excitement of the new memories to come.

Have a wonderful week and if you get a moment or two the next time you sit down to sip a cup of your morning beverage of choice, reflect upon your past and embrace the person that you have become.
